i also have problems with a slow startup
i had a nvidia tnt2 32mb m64 and it worked fine when starting X.
but now i have upgraded to a pixelview geforce4 MX440 and now it takes 10 or so seconds for the login screen to come up.
but i have found that it also takes the same amount of time to load when booting windows XP
