I use a Hauppauge card for capture, works very nice on Linux, and seems to get along well enough with playing on my nVidia card.
While Hauppauge WinTV-PVR cards are nice they certainly can't be compared to the encoding/decoding features that are available with NVIDIA cards such as the MSI NX7800GTX-VT2D512E which supports H.264 hardware assist, HDTV decoding up to 1920x1080 resolution, three dedicated video engines, etc.
