The vesa driver doesn't really know it is outputting to a TV at all. Further I'm not sure if the mode being used by vesafb is good for the TV. The only fix (which will also speed up video playing a lot) is to use a Xserver running with the nvidia drivers. Then it should work fine.
i am _really_ hoping to _not_ install X on this machine.
is there anyway to get quality tv out and NOT use X? directfb? fb? svga?
