I see this as more practical for someone with water cooling. Just drawing upon what I've seen of those setups and how this card is configured, there would appear to be less of a chance of a hose kinking because it wouldn't have to be routed around the "front" of the video card to where GPUs traditionally reside.
For someone with standard air cooling, I would agree with you that a large heatsink would simply move hot air over the GPU, thereby negating any airflow benefits.
