I read something that says the new drivers basically ignore your mode requests and go with hardware profiles, is that correct?

I suspect this is a refresh rate problem, as when I power cycle the monitor I can occasionally get the login prompt up. Once I do, I can login to KDE or Gnome and set the refresh rate in the window manager itself. Then the graphics always come up once the window manager is loaded, but before then I still get the "unable to display" message. This includes anything prior to logging in as well.

So what magic X config do I need to force the correct mode? (1680x1050 @ 60hz)
