Default Performance issues on FreeBSD 5.4/X.org

I'm running FreeBSD 5.4-RELEASE with X.org 6.8.2 and the Nvidia 1.0-8178 drivers.

On my AMD 2400+ with GeForce FX 5700 LE I get around 2000 fps in glxgears (minimized), which while better than unaccelerated, is somewhat lower than what I would expect. I also only get around 10 fps in WoW (run via wine 0.9.5) with the lowest possible settings, which is way lower than I had hoped.

I've tried changing values in the xorg.conf and fiddling with nvidia-settings but there are no significant changes in performance.

I assume I have missed something but I can't find out what and my google skills seems a bit lacking.

I also tried reverting to Nvidia 1.0-6113 but that didn't change much.

The device section in my xorg.conf:
Code:
Section "Device"
    Identifier  "Nvidia 5700LE"
    #Driver      "nv"
    #VideoRam    131072
    # Insert Clocks lines here if appropriate
    Driver "nvidia"
    Option "NvAGP" "1"
    Option "RenderAccel" "1"
    Option "Coolbits" "1"
    Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "1"
EndSection
In my /boot/loader.conf I have the following:
Code:
hint.acpi.0.disabled=0
snd_ich_load="YES"
hint.agp.0.disabled="1"
nvidia_load="YES"
linux_load="YES"
