You will need to read the grub manual (eg on the web) to configure and use it because so much depends on individual circumstances. One thing you can do is boot the grub floppy and do something like
kernel (hd0,<some_number>)/boot/somekernel root=/dev/a<some_number+1>
and see what happens. Grub has the cat command to read any text file on your harddisk too. And, tab completion is neat.
