Thanks! That worked for me.
I have only connected a tv, no crt.
here is an extract of the relevant lines in my xorg.conf
Section "Screen"
SubSection "Display"
Virtual 800 600
Depth 24
Modes "800x600" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "640x400"
EndSubSection
Section "Device"
Option "TVStandard" "HD480i"
Option "UseDisplayDevice" "TV-0"
I still recommend nvtv to set up the modes, right after x has started because it gives much stronger colours and better use of the whole display.
