There's a learning curve to Linux, Vlad. No doubt about it. Stick with it. It's worth it.
Let's do a few things just for sanity's sake.
1. Boot to the latest kernel. Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get to a black screen.
2. Login as root and run mc. If Midnight Commander doesn't start (it might not be installed, that's OK. Run "yum -y install mc ". When it's done, run mc again. Great little text based file manager.
3. In mc, go to /etc/inittab (use the edit functions) and look for id:5:initdefault: . Change that 5 to a 3. Save the results with the appropriate function key. Exit mc back to a command line and type " shutdown -r now ".
4. When your system reboots, it will be in runlevel 3. Whenever you're having X problems, booting directly INTO X is counter-productive. Once you have the problems resolved and X is working, just change the 3 back to a 5 in inittab.
5. Still as root, go to /etc/X11 and copy xorg.conf to xorg.conf.sanity
6. Using edit function in mc again, open the sanity file and go to the line that says Driver "nvidia" and make that Driver "nv" and save it. Then exit out of mc. Having a working X config keeps you from throwing your skippy new laptop up against the wall. Now if for whatever reason X crashes during your testing, you can just go to /etc/X11 and type "cp xorg.conf.sanity xorg.conf" and you will be able to run startx to have your GUI back up while you find the problem.
Those 2 things will give you a leg up in finding your problem. I was unclear from your posts if you are installing the driver from the Nvidia driver package or from the kernel-mod RPM. For a linux newbie, the kernel-mod RPM would probably be the way to go. If you were trying to install the Nvidia driver package from the Ctrl-Alt-F1 screen with or without "init 3", I have seen that fail for folks for reasons unknown. Follow the intall instructions again with your system setup in the above steps and see if it makes a difference. If not, yum -y install yumex will give you a nice little GUI frontend to yum. Find the kernel-mod that matches your running kernel and install that. Make sure that the specs for your LCD are accurately reflected in /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and post the results of the above helpful hints.
