Default eVGA Geforce FX 5900 Ultra running VERY hot

A while ago I gave my gf my old eVGA Geforce FX 5900 Ultra when I upgraded to a 7800 GT. It was running fine for a very long time but recently her system has begun to crash alot. At first we thought it was a driver issue and tried a number of different things that was suggested to use in the nvidia Linux forums(issue was happening on Linux but it happens on Win to, she just dosnt use win that often). What happens is that after running any 3D app on Linux or Windows the system just crashes. The card idles at about 67C and within 5min of running an app the card gets to 100C. We cleaned the card off and it didnt help at all. Should we try to replace the fan, or would replacing it with a 6600 or 6800 just be better? Do you think the card is damaged?

Thanks for your help!
