Okay...it seems the default installation of Kubuntu puts the nvidia-kernel-common files on there and that's why It was using the 7174 version even though I downloaded and ran the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1 file.

I performed a fresh installation just to be sure I didn't have anything that would cause issues and I removed the nvidia-kernel-common that came with Kubuntu.

I re-ran the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1 installer.

glxinfo shows direct rendering is Yes

I still seems to be receiving this error (from Xorg.0.log)

(WW) NVIDIA: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:5:0:0) found
