This is not true. Despite the fact that you need to force the ABI on some distros' builds of X, the 2D acceleration architecture is broken beyond repair. Development versions of Gtk+ do not work (used by Fedora Core), even with subpixel hinting enabled. Wine does not work, or anything that uses XRENDER directly. KDE does work, mystically, but only with subpixel hinting, which is not ideal.
