These options were among a couple of random things I was shooting in the dark with. I've removed them, and the xorg.conf file we're now working with is exactly what sax2 automatically generated.
One more data point: An antique Redhat 9 installation with a very old (4496) nvidia (not nv) driver has been running on this machine for years at 1920x1200 without any problems, though I recall some pain getting it to work right when I first installed/configured it.
The SLED 10 installation is obviously new.

I changed the default runlevel to 3 and started X manually as described. The nvidia-bug-report.log file is attached.
