The nvidia kernel module needs the kernel source because it compiles against it, making sure that its using the latest code basicly customizing the nvidia kernel for your version of Linux. I would suggest upgrading to a later version of the kernel(such as 2.6.18). Most distros have a system to upgrade your systems packages such as yum, apt, or portage. Many of these distros also have availible binary packages avaible either officaly or though third party servers. If your running Fedora check FedoraForum.org and FedoraFAQ.org
