Ok, I have tried to use the beta nvidia driver twice now, using two different methods, using the official nvidia installer, and ubuntu debs. On my 5600FX both work well and wonderfully. However on my 7800gt when X loads I just get a black screen, no gdm or anything, I cannot switch to terminal at all. I understand its a beta driver, but ummm I have heard that one of the devs for nvidia visits here or is on the forum. I would like to know what information I could post to help the dev(s), iron out the kinks in the driver. I see people posting crash logs, where do I find these logs? Also here is my xorg.conf.
BTW both the machines are running Ubuntu 6.10 (edgy) beta. With xorg 7.1.1 |

Please generate and attach an nvidia-bug-report.log.
Thanks, Lonni |

I get the same behaviour with my 7800GS. The machine appears to completely lock up when X starts, with just a blank screen. I can ssh to it, but nvidia-bug-report.sh hangs when run - I killed it after 5 minutes or so, but I'll attach what went into the log anyway. If I reboot it remotely the monitors do not display anything until it's reset.
So it looks like nvidia-bug-report.sh hangs trying to read /proc/drivers/nvidia/cards/0, here's the normal output of that file: wabz@wabz:~$ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/cards/0 Model: GeForce 7800 GS IRQ: 177 Video BIOS: 05.71.22.21.11 Card Type: AGP DMA Size: 32 bits DMA Mask: 0xffffffff |

sorry but how do I generate a bug report if the computer is completly unusable at boot up. The only way i was able to fix edgy was reboot into single user mode, and then rollback to a stable driver.
If it helps I have a BFG 7800GT OC w/ 256MB. |

The driver works like a charm now, I have beryl running without xgl, or aiglx. Well I never ran aiglx but, now I boot up into edgy, and runs under 250MB. woot. Thank you for pointing out that post, thank you so much!!!!! |

btw, even if you do load eeprom and your box hangs - with sysrq-r you would have got keyboard working and would have been able to switch to a console.
