Default Not Working: Acer 2032W FC5 GeForce 7300LE

I've been trying along with my friendly neighborhood Linux expert to make the system work.

For the record:
Acer 2032W wide screen monitor (1680x1050/1600x1200)
New HP desktop (Pentium D 930)
GeForce 7300 LE
Fedora Core 2.6.17-1.2187_FC5smp

The system is stable. I can make it work in 1280x1024 without any problem. No other resolutions seem to work. The driver is coming up as "nvidia", the monitor as "AL2932W" (correct) and the video card as "nVidia Corporation Unknown device 01d1". As far as I can tell 01d1 is an ID for the 7300, and I could swear I have a current nVidia driver, so I don't know why it's not reporting something more intelligible.

Most of the time when I pick a different resolution, the monitor reports that it's in either 1280x1024 and parts of the screen fall off the side, or it reports 1280x960 and the screen is scrambled. For 1600x1200 the monitor reports failure to sync.

This is a new install of the OS so if I need to punt (ie kill the partition and reload the OS) that's fine by me. Whatever it takes to make it work.

For the record, the monitor works fine in a Windows XP boot on the same machine at 1600x1200.

Thanks,
Eric Ruck

If this problem reproduces with 1.0-9625, please start X with the following command:
startx -- -logverbose 6

and then generate and attach an nvidia-bug-report.log.

Thanks,
Lonni

Not to be dense but I'm a windows guy. I assume 1.0-9625 is a driver version? How do I tell what version I'm using now?

cat /proc/driver/nvidia/version

1.0-9625 is available here:

Found the NVidia X Server Settings. I'm using driver 1.0-8774. That appears to be what I just downloaded from nvidia.com. Is there a better source for drivers?

(Oops, looks like we crossed in the mail)

Can't get driver to install. Stopping X isn't a problem. After accepting the license I get "No precompiled kernel", I answer "yes" and get "No matching precompiled kernel". Click "Ok" and get "Unable to find the kernel source tree"; click and then "installation failed".

yum install "kernel-smp-devel"

The the NVidia graphical utility worked fine. Oh yeah, one other thing, in case anyone is interested, the system still doesn't like 1680x1050, it wanted 1600x1200.

I am grateful for your assistance. May your crops be fertile, and your children wait to be fertile until they've seen something of the world.
