New twist on blank screen

Okay, here goes: Slackware 9, XFree86 4.30, running an athlon-xp optimized NON-SMP kernel that I built from the distro sources. I installed the 43.49 drivers, and the installer (of course) had to compile them itself (I like to think it's never seen a kernel as fast as mine

. No problems reported. Sweet. Then I edited my XF86Config, made sure glx was there and dri wasn't, and replaced "vesa" with "nvidia". I saved it and ran startx, and...nothing. Not even a resolution change; just a blank screen. The funny thing is, when I went to look at the log, it hadn't created one. At all. Here's what I've tried, with no change:
insmod nvidia (it loads fine)
disabling agp
playing with the resolution/bitdepth
waiting for 20 min
mystical incantations
but I come up with bugger-all as to what could be causing this. Attached is my now-fairly-mangled xf86config file.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

can I ask what mobo you got and what card?
I have a blank screen and KT400 (with LAN on board) and GeForce2 MX 400
but no slackware or anything, just a mdk, weird thing is that I tried older drivers as well...

sure. I'm running an ecs K7S5A (also with onboard lan) with a Geforce3 ti500. I'm a recent convert from redhat 7, where I had been running one of the 21 series drivers, i think, with no problem.

As for your problem, does your monitor change resolutions during the blank screen? have you tried disabling AGP(option "nvAGP" "0" in your device section in XF86Config)?
Also, from what I've read here, SMP kernels on uniprocessor machines cause problems. In my personal experience, a lot of the problems with the nvidia drivers have been related to disabling the "Plug and Play aware OS" option and enabling the "assign IRQ to pci VGA" in the bios. Post your /var/log/XFree86.0.log (if it creates one during a blank-screen startup).
