Default TwinView does not consistently maximize windows

Hi:

I have four monitors set up:
0-1-2-3

where monitors 0 & 3 display single X screens. The middle two
monitors run TwinView. I do not understand what happens when I try to
maximize a window.

Things work as expected in the two single-X monitors (i.e., 0 & 3).

Things do not work on the TwinView display (i.e., monitors 1 & 2).
Here is what happens:
-->maximizing a window fills both screens

This is odd, because if I use do not use monitors 0 & 3, then
-->maximizing a window fills only ONE of the TwinView screens

So, why does TwinView reponds differently when I have this set up
0-1-2-3
than when I have this set up
-1-2-

Any thoughts? Note that I do not have Xinerama enabled.

The first set up:
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "121"
Screen 0 "ScreenAGPtwin" 0 0
Screen 1 "ScreenQuad10" LeftOf "ScreenAGPtwin"
Screen 2 "ScreenQuad11" RightOf "ScreenAGPtwin"
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection

The second set up:
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "121"
Screen 0 "ScreenAGPtwin" 0 0
#Screen 1 "ScreenQuad10" LeftOf "ScreenAGPtwin"
#Screen 2 "ScreenQuad11" RightOf "ScreenAGPtwin"
InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer"
InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard"
EndSection

My kernel: 2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp
Nvidia drivers: NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-8762-pkg2.run
Desktop: gnome

The TwinView monitors run off an AGP card; the other two off a PCI card.

Thanks!!!
