Default Geforce 2 and ubuntu 6.10

I am trying to install drivers for this card. I can't set resolution any higher than 1024x768 (card is capable of 1600x1200 or more) I saw somewhere (although it isn't easy to find) that Geforce 2 and older are legacy cards. I am trying to install drives as directed here http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d..._1.0-7184.html but when I open alt-F2 and type "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-7184-pkg1.run" and click "run", nothing happens, the window just closes and I still only have 1024x768.

What am I missing.

The installer has to be run from the console while X is not running.
Check out the ubuntu forums:
You should be able to find some howto's there.
