DPMS problem

I'm using a fresh install of Kubuntu 6.10 with the Nvidia drivers provided from the standard repositories. I can't get DPMS to work on Kubuntu 6.10 but it worked on Kubuntu 6.06. I tried enabling DPMS in KDE, in xorg.conf and at the command prompt with 'xset'...The screen blanks but the display does not turn off.

Nvidia Geforce FX 5600 Ultra, Nvidia glx 8774 driver, 2.6.17-10-generic linux kernel with HT=on flag set, Xorg 7.1

I suspect the problem may be the Nvidia driver because I can make DPMS work with 'xset' if I boot from the Kubuntu 6.10 Live CD or boot Kubuntu in Safe Mode. I'd appreciate any help in this matter.

Never Mind. I did some further tests and checked into it some more. The problem is not with the Nvidia driver. Its with kubuntu and/or KDE. I can enable DPMS with 'xset' at the command-line. I can't do it from KDE's Kcontrol menu and make the Power Save time stick between reboots...It always seems to default to 5 hours.
