Default 85Hz refresh rate, nvidia-drivers-1.0.9626

Hi all,

I'm using Gentoo/AMD64 with linux-kernel version 2.6.18 and Xorg 7.1, which recognizes my sata-hdd on Intel ICH8R. The Nvidia-beta-driver 1.0.9626 is compiling under that kernel and working stable.

However, the driver ignores the 85Hz refresh-rates for all resolutions. "nvidia-settings" is not offering the 85Hz refresh-rate and configuring it via xorg.conf with "Modeline" (probed by nv, 85Hz is working with that driver) or
Quote:
Modes "1600x1200_85"
is ignored.

Here is xorg.conf, Xorg.0.log and nvidia-bug-report are attached:

How can I get 1600x1200 with 85Hz working on that Iiyama Vision master Pro 510 CRT? 75Hz on a CRT are pretty stressful for the eyes.

Thanks for your help. Cheers,

Sven

Thanks for your suggenstion, here is the necessary option in the device-section for 85hz refresh working:

Code:
Option "VertRefresh" "85"

### Values: <i>: integer, <f>: float, <bool>: "True"/"False",
### <string>: "String", <freq>: "<f> Hz/kHz/MHz"

You should try renaming your "1600x1200" modeline to something unique so that it can be easily differentiated from the 'standard' 1600x1200 modes.

Please start X with the following command:
startx -- -logverbose 6

and then generate and attach a new bug report.

Thanks,
Lonni

Hi Lonni,

thanks for your help. As already stated, adding the
Code:
Option "VertRefresh" "85"
to the "Device"-Section in xorg.conf solves the problem. I commented out all the "Modeline"s to rely on the drivers auto-recognition for debugging-purposes.

I did two X-starts with the different configurations:
Code:
Option "VertRefresh" "85"
and
Code:
# Option "VertRefresh" "85"
respectively.

The reports are attached. Here is an excerpt (from startup-log without forcing 85Hz) that documents the problem:
Quote:
(II) NVIDIA(0): Validating Mode "1600x1200":
(II) NVIDIA(0): 1600 x 1200 @ 85 Hz
(II) NVIDIA(0): Mode Source: X Server
(II) NVIDIA(0): Pixel Clock : 229.50 MHz
(II) NVIDIA(0): HRes, HSyncStart : 1600, 1664
(II) NVIDIA(0): HSyncEnd, HTotal : 1856, 2160
(II) NVIDIA(0): VRes, VSyncStart : 1200, 1201
(II) NVIDIA(0): VSyncEnd, VTotal : 1204, 1250
(II) NVIDIA(0): H/V Polarity : +/+
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Mode is rejected: VertRefresh (85.0 Hz) out of range
(WW) NVIDIA(0): (56.000-80.000 Hz).
It's strange, because the "Monitor"-Section in xorg.conf looks like
Quote:
Section "Monitor"
DisplaySize 400 300
HorizSync 30-130
Identifier "Monitor0"
ModelName "A201HT VISIONMASTER PRO 510"
Option "DPMS"
#Option "CalcAlgorithm" "UseFrameBufferTiming"
VendorName "IIYAMA"
VertRefresh 50-160
and should accept 85Hz refresh, right?

Cheers,

Sven

You probably need to specify the Hsync aswell.
"HorizSync 30-130"
and ofcourse tell the driver to ignore EDID...

According to the EDID in your CRT, its maximum refresh rate is 80Hz:
(--) NVIDIA(0): Valid VRefresh Range : 56 Hz - 80 Hz

I'm not clear why you think your CRT is capable of an 85Hz refresh rate?

Well, it has been running with 1600x1200 at 85Hz for years. In fact Xorg`s nv-driver is probing and setting it up with 85Hz as well as nvidida-drivers prior to 1.0.9x. However forcing the latest drivers to use 85 via 'Option "VertRefresh" "85"' eliminates that issue.

I was pretty puzzled about that EDID-information "valid VRefresh Range", as Iiyama spcifies that device to be able to do 1600x1200 with 100Hz, as far as I know. A rough calculation proves that:

Max VRefresh = Max HSync / vert. lines = 128kHz / 1200 \approx 107 Hz, right?

The windows-drivers is offering that rate, but the picture is pretty blurry at 100Hz. UXGA at 85Hz is ideal for the Vision Master Pro 510 and has been standard before version 1.0.9x and the nv-driver, as already stated.

Maybe "Valid VRefresh Range" from EDID has the semantics of "don't use rates above 80 Hz or the picture quality will become wore". 85 Hz is just fine nevertheless.

In most cases, what appears in the EDID is what has been verified to work well. In some cases, its the only thing that works.
