8762 doesn't build under 2.6.17-git

SuSE 10.1, I rebooted on 2.6.18-rc1 to init 3, changed to /usr/src/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8762-pkg1/usr/src/nv (zander's patch applied), did "make install" , "init 5" and it's all working.

Are the contents of /usr/src/linux-2.6.18-rc1 the same as they were when you first built the kernel or have you made changes, or run additional commands which altered the source?

I have not made any changes. The content were created by make make modules and make modules_install

This all points to a problem with the state of your kernel source for the kernel you're running.

This can be Slackware specific error. I also have it.

Prevoiusly I think that was something wrong with source dir (I apply patches to get newer kernel), but I download vanilla kernel, add my config and run "make bzImage modules", and error still exists.

I try run installer with/whithout latest patch, and with/without --krenel-source-path option under 2.6.18-rc1 kernel and with --kernel-version under 2.6.17 kernel.

I attach my installer log but this is nothnig new.

I think that, problem may by caused by moving "#define UTS_RELEASE" from version.h to utsrelease.h. I try change conftest.sh and test this.

I have right. I include patch that fix this problem

Had exactly the same problem, the patch solved the problem (also added #define UTS_RELEASE "2.6.18.2-default" to include/linux/version.h).

Btw, it all went well enough even without switching to runlevel 3
