Default Black screen with 1.0.9629

I have just tried 1.0.9269 hoping that it would solve my black screen problem. Unfortunately it did not. The fact that I was able to see something in lower resolutions like 800x600 doesn't seem to contribute towards understanding this issue. I would like to relate here a few things I noticed:

1. The EDID's were completely wrong as before, so I had to add the option "UseEDID" "false". Additionally, to get this to work properly, I added the option "ExactModeTimingsDVI" "1".

2. The backend mode was detected as "640x480" which is also wrong for my DFP is 1024x768 in its optimal settings. This forced me to add more options to the monitor and to the screen section. I'm ommiting them here, since they can be found in the attached bug report.

3. The screen does not go completely black. It shows a single line of garbled pixels about the middle of the screen, as if it were way out-of-sync.

4. The frequencies I am using in the monitor section work perfecly well with the 1.0.8776 driver and they seem to be correct.

5. I tried different modes: 1024x768_75, 1024x768_70, and 1024x768_60. They all produce the exact same effect.

6. Between each activation, I completely removed the nvidia driver from the kernel to have it freshly loaded each time. I was hoping that this would force the driver to properly initialize the video, but I'm not sure that it is the case.

I've attached a bug report showing this scenario and also another one of a working 1.0.8776 scenario for comparison. Additionally, since I am mostly back to the nv driver, I've also included it's log where things seem to be quite different.

I hope all this info will be of some use.

hi wschutzer,

Exactly. facing the same issue here as well. EDID just don't work as it is as in 8776 or older version. Tried so many option suggested by Lonni, but still no go. I think I just sticked to 8776 for the time being.

Do you noticed that there's always this warning when the resolution failed?

(WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (0, 3, 0x8000, 0x000008c0, 0x000008c0)
(WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (0, 11, 0x8000, 0x000008e0, 0x000008e0)

I wondering what does it mean?

Hi synixus,

In fact I did notice these messages, and I also wonder about their meaning.

Hi Lonni,

Any others advice or solution on this black screen issue with GeForce4 440 Go on Dell Inspiron 8200 & Latitude C840? As for xorg.conf is no change, its work on 8776 but not 9xxx driver. Thanks in advance.

I get the black frozen screen alot too, but not on startup, however often when switching between 2 X sessions.

I also get those WAIT lines in my log, sysrq-r doesn't even work to get the keyboard back .. I have to sysrq-s and sysrq-b to sync/reboot.

Hell, the beta drivers didn't do this.. I am back on the previous stable, for now.

Sometimes I just want something that works

EDIT: Attached bug report from 8776 drivers, if it helps any..

Hi Lonni,

It seems that this problem is specific to the GeForce4 440 Go [NV17] card. Perhaps it deserves to be investigated more closely. Please.

Seems that may be the main cause, but there are many other reasons for this (ie, read my post)

Hey meff,

Are you setting the SoftEDIDs and Mobile driver options? On my notebook the absence of these options causes a kernel panic in the nvidia driver. You can try something like:

Code:
options nvidia NVreg_SoftEDIDs=0 NVreg_Mobile=4
However, you'll have to figure out what is the right value for the Mobile option. Have a look at the README.

I'd also like to add that I have just managed to get beryl to work with Xgl and the 1.0.8776 driver, which is fantastic. At least now I can wait for the next driver to come out. Then perhaps I'll try to make work on AIGLX.

PS: here is how to get beryl working on Fedora Core 6 and Xgl (with either ATI or nvidia):

Look on the few last posts of that thread.

Sadly, my problem is with the black screen when switching between two X sessions. I am using a desktop computer with a 7900GS

Thanks though.

My X comes up fine from a boot but after restoring from "Suspend" I get the blank screen problem with these sort of WAIT messages.
(II) Open ACPI successful (/var/run/acpid.socket)
(WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 6, 0x8000, 0x00000000, 0x000010c4)
(WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (1, 6, 0x8000, 0x00000000, 0x000010c4)
(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1920x1200"
(WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 1, 0x8000, 0x00000000, 0x00001188)
(WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (1, 1, 0x8000, 0x00000000, 0x00001188)
(WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 3, 0x8000, 0x00000000, 0x000016bc)
(WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (1, 3, 0x8000, 0x00000000, 0x000016bc)

I have a Quadro FX Go 1400 on a Dell M70 Laptop
I am running the instrumented NVPerfKit-Linux 9640 driver.
Otherwise very sweet drivers and linux support.
