Default Card capabilities changed between 87x and 9x

I've got two similar pc's X2 4600+, Core 2 Duo with 2gb ram and ubuntu edgy. They run a 7600GS and a 6600GT dual DVI nvidia card.

The monitors attached are:
X2: Acer AL2021 (20" 1600x1200) and an Acer AL1721 (17" 1280x1024)
Core2: Acer AL2021 (20" 1600x1200) and a IIyama ProLite E481S (19" 1280x10024)

With the stock edgy drivers (dapper, breezy, idem) i can run in twin view with 1600x1200 + 1280x1024 without any problemes.

I've installed version 96 and as a result my 20" monitors won't go over 1280x1024.

Reverting to the 8x driver gets me my 1600x1200 twin view setup back. So i was wondering why changing drivers has this effect?

Because in the new driver, assumptions were added that are not valid.
Like, that the native resolution field of DFP EDID data is always correct, and that nobody would ever want to use a higher resolution than the native resolution.

Both are of course not true. But it will require many reports like yours to convince NVIDIA, it seems.

Please try adding the following to xorg.conf:
Option "ModeValidation" "NoDFPNativeResolutionCheck"
