Default Stuck on 1280x800 with Linux 9631 driver, Apple 30" and 7800 GS OC

Hello,

I can't seem to get my Apple 30" display beyond 1280x800 running on Ubuntu with version 9631 of the nvidia driver. I keep getting the following warnings from the X server:

Quote:
(--) NVIDIA(0): Connected display device(s) on GeForce 7800 GS at PCI:1:0:0:
(--) NVIDIA(0): Apple Cinema HDDisplay (DFP-0)

(WW) NVIDIA(0): No valid modes for "2048x1280"; removing.
(WW) NVIDIA(0): No valid modes for "1920x1200"; removing.
(WW) NVIDIA(0):

(II) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 1280 x 800
(--) NVIDIA(0): DPI set to (50, 50); computed from "UseEdidDpi" X config
(--) NVIDIA(0): option
I've read several threads over and over again on this forum and I still cannot figure out how to make this care give me more than 1280x800. The nv driver gives out 2560x1600 without a problem.

Thanks in advance,
Alex

Does anyone have an idea of how to get around this limitation?

Is this GeForce 7800 GS OC from BFG the right card for this monitor's native resolution?

Thanks,
Alex

IgnoreEDID options already been deprecated. Can you try "UseEDID" "0".
Check your /var/log/Xorg.0.log for troubleshooting the error's generated.

Goodluck.

Hi thanks so much for your support. I tried the new setting and some interesting things started to happen.

First the screen blacked out but it looked like X sort of started because I heard the sounds of the Ubuntu login screen. However the monitor blacked out and I had to [Ctrl][Alt][Backspace] to drop out of X. Here's what I saw in my Xorg log file regarding the use of modelines this time:

Quote:
(**) NVIDIA(0): Using HorizSync/VertRefresh ranges from the EDID has been
(**) NVIDIA(0): disabled on all display devices.
(**) NVIDIA(0): ConnectedMonitor string: "DFP"
(**) NVIDIA(0): Ignoring EDIDs

(++) NVIDIA(0): DPI set to (100, 100); computed from -dpi X commandline option
(--) Depth 24 pixmap format is 32 bpp
Interestingly this time the screen size was less with greater DPI. And I see that the card is not recognized as a dual link DVI card. Is this 7800 GS OC actually dual link? I purchased it because some online adds said it was. Is the card the problem here?

Hmmm I'm completely confused. Why won't my monitor accept the modelines? Do I have the wrong modelines?

Thanks so much again. I'm greatly appreciative.

Alex

You cannot drive 2560x1600 with single link TMDS. If this works with the nv driver, then its likely using a heavily reduced refresh rate.

Thanks,
Lonni

Yep guys it is a Single Link DVI card after all. I went out and bought one that was not a 7600GS. And wa la everything was working at 2560x1600 it was great. Got beryl-manager working with it too.

Thanks and sorry for the distraction.

I do however have one problem now with this settup: the X server just dies sometimes for no apparent reason. I cannot find anything in the X logs. Any ideas how to troubleshoot this issue?

Should I open a different thread for this?

Thanks!

If it's a different card and a different problem, then yes - it would be better to start a new thread. Also include an nvidia-bug-report without that Lonni has to ASK for it first
