Default Re: AIGLX - what kind of specs needed to run?

Hi,
Maybe AIGLX is just slow on our computers - i have very slow compiz with aiglx...
I have just looked at your bug-report (but I am just a newbie so I am not a trusted reference...). Apparently is not an agp mode issue. Have you tried without the AIGLX option in xorg.conf and loading extmod and glx(see the previous attached xorg.conf) in
Section "Module"
Load "glx"
Load "extmod"
EndSection

Comparing to my bug-report-log i found only some strange the selinux access-denied lines... Are you still have an issue with sellinux ? if you do a dmesg you still have the audit lines :
audit(1164781405.662:6): avc: denied { execmod } for pid=10230
comm="ld-linux.so.2" name="libnvidia-tls.so.1.0.9626" dev=dm-2 ino=707165
scontext=system_u:system_rrelink_t:s0 tcontext=rootbject_r:lib_t:s0
tclass=file
?

What are glxgears your numbers (curiosity inside )?

Best,
Andrei

I have a geforce 4 ti 4200 128 mb running on ubuntu edgy and driver 9631. I use compiz 0.34 (so the latest version) and performance aren't bad (I don't si any difference between aiglx and nvidia glx) except with with 3d application (in fullscreen or not).

for example with compiz disabled, I have 3000 fps with glxgears, but when I enable it, my score is 300 !!
Same problem whith other 3d application (for example with warsow).

I have the same laptop D800 and the same graphics card CPU and RAM (the only diference is that I have 64M Vram) and i am using FC6 . What are your glxgears numbers? Mines are:
13296 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2659.177 FPS
If you have smaller numbers there must be something wrong with your settings (maybe agp mode?).
Try this:
cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
Status: Enabled
Driver: NVIDIA
AGP Rate: 4x
Fast Writes: Disabled
SBA: Disabled
For me Beryl/Compiz works ok (now I am using 9631 and I can get up to 130fps in beryl using beryl-benchmark). Nevertheless there are some stability bugs, the most annoying is the black window bug (caused by a nvidia driver glitch).

Ahhhh, and i am not using AXGL because is damn slow!!! use nvidia glx mode instead (how are you starting compiz? with --axgl?).
I attach my Xorg file, so you can take a look...I hope I am not off topic...
Best,
Andrei
hey I changed/added some lines in my xorg.conf according to yours and its better !
glxgears give me 1650 fps ! but its still only half of my score without compiz enabled !
Also, 3d application (e.g. warsow) are still slow (but a bit less than before)

so thanks for yours help even if its not completely solved

A performance his is always expected when using Composite as everything as to first be rendered off screen, and then composited onto the display area.

so there is nothing we can do against this ? 3d perf in compiz or beryl will always be less than metacity or other ?

arff it's a pity... really :s

but nevertheless, it's about 50% slower in 3d application ! It's a little too much, isn't it ?

Correct, you will always experience a performance hit when using a compositing manager. The amount of performance loss would depend on the GPU you were using, along with several other factors.

Hi,
I also have the same (and normal) perf hit with compiz 0.34
- metacity:
[andrei@dhcpr-232 ~]$ glxgears
13898 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2779.573 FPS
13673 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2734.440 FPS

-compiz :
9506 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1901.082 FPS
9185 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1836.047 FPS

I found it interesting that if i am running kde I have lower numbers (by approx 700 FPS !) - with the same configuration using the same kconsole for launching glxgears . This might be one of the other factors that netlama was talking about
All the best,
Andrei
