Unless you have an original Pentium CPU, you could be using the i686 arch.

Hmm, I remember seeing this in his first log and wanting to comment on it... but didn't.

You should realize that if you have a i686 compatible, then you should use kernel modules and a kernel image for the i686, never the i586. For anything other you should prefer an i386 package (read: general) over an i586 package. The latter will contain specific optimization that will slow down the application on your architecture relative the i386 one. In other words ANY package that you have that contains an i586 in it's version should be replaced.

That's a helpful point. So why is i586 used at all? I understand that if the choice is i386 or i586, choose i386. What architecture does i586 support? And where is the breakover between i386/i686?
