Most games are letterboxed on my 17" 1280*1024 LCD. I can force it not to be letterboxed by selecting "widescreen", but then most games are stretched. Some that aren't tryue 720p (it appears COD2 is one of those) aren't, but GOW/GRAW are.

The 360's VGA output while not bad, doesn't approach the pixel-perfect display from a PC card though, so 17" letterboxed is not only small but somewhat blurry. So I just ended up hooking it up to my 36" SDTV via component. Not optimal of course, but actually not bad.

I would just get an HDTV and if you don't game on the PC that much, get a cheapo $500 model - just make sure it has a PCI-E 16X slot for a decent GPU for Vista.

4:3 resolution is 1280x800 (within a few pixels)

Honestly a 720p LCD TV is very cheap these days.
