Default Asus Laptop + Nvidia GForce GO 7400 + Edgy =Crash

This occurs with nvidia beta drivers and also the stable nvidia proprietary drivers. I haven't got any problems with the 'nv' driver.

The screen will shake and kinda jump around with white lines appearing and other buggy things appearing, then sometimes it will freeze up, sometimes it will freeze up and the screen will go completely white, and sometimes it will unfreeze itself after a couple seconds.

However, I can ssh in while the display is frozen and work perfectly. I can killall Xorg and restart it, however the problem still repeats itself.

My syslog reports alot of NVM Xid's right before a crash.

Have you verified that you're using the latest BIOS?
Does this problem persist with a 2.6.18.x kernel.org kernel as well?

Thanks,
Lonni

I can't flash my BIOS with a new one because I have no floppy drive and I have yet found out how to make a bootable cd-rom. If someone can please tell me how to make a bootable cdrom from within Linux that would be great.

Also I'm using Ubuntu and the 2.6.18 kernel is not in the repositories.

Right, but I didn't want you to use an Ubuntu kernel, I wanted you to test with a kernel.org kernel.

Thanks,
Lonni

Yikes, I don't know about that. I'm already using an experimental release of Ubuntu to begin with. Is it safe to use a non-ubuntu kernel? I wouldn't even know how to go about installing it. Also, what about the headers? I am not a linux guru in any sense of the word.

I have the same problem with the Asus Lamborghini VX1.

Using kernel 2.6.18 didnīt help, so tried to use
agp=off
as kernel parameter and
Option "NvAgp " "0"
in /etc/X11/xorg.conf

using this parametes, the screen freezes after some seconds, but without any "shaking", and the mousepointer keeps moveable (and is rendered correctly).

With the agpgart-driver, I have the same problems jadacyrus has.
Sometimes is is possible for me to switch to a text-console when the display errors occurs. Then, the display is also corrupted.

After upgrading the Bios, the GeForce GO 7400 works!

@jadtacyrus: you donīt need a floppy disc drive for updating,
just start the Bios and select EasyFlash (or press F4 during boot).
This utility can read vfat partitions, so you can save the file vx1as.205 onto a windows partition.
Seems like the version 2.04 included an update for the graphics-card,
my laptop shipped with version 2.01

I've created an NTFS partition using GParted and put the file on it, but I don't know how to access it through EasyFlash Utility..It only gives me options for A: , B: and C:..

Anyone know what to do?

EDIT: Nevermind, NTFS != vfat...heh formatted it to fat32 and it worked!! thanks deca!!
