So far I have not discovered any other bugs with 9631.

I have an NV28 (Ti 4200 Go), which is similar to yours and yes the 9631 driver doesn't solve the black windows problem in compiz/beryl.

Even if the black windows problem was not present, compiz/beryl run terribly slow! This was also the case with 9625/6. You can use --indirect-rendering with compiz and then all windows are drawn properly, but because it still is too slow it's practically useless. None of the --use-cow or --strict-binding help either.

to answer my own post :P, I was getting slow performance because I was using AGPGART and not the nvidia one. Switching back to nvidia-agp:

$ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
Status: Enabled
Driver: NVIDIA
AGP Rate: 4x
Fast Writes: Enabled
SBA: Enabled

...performance is back to normal, of course the black windows are still here.

hope this will prove useful to anyone that may have the same performance issue I was noticing.

Hello nvidia, fixing the black window thingy with beryl is going to take much longer? you are making me wish I had bought another card brand

Please guys, *do* release a beta or something real soon now.

Regards
Ar

ioannis,

Thanks for pointing this out. Unfortunately, I saw no change in performance, either subjectively or via glxgears after making the change.

Just as an FYI, for anyone else that might want to try this, on FC6, I did the following.

Check to be sure that Fast Writes and SBA are supported:

$ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/card
Fast Writes: Supported
SBA: Supported
AGP Rates: 4x 2x 1x
Registers: 0x1f000217:0x1f000314

If so, add the following lines to /etc/modprobe.conf:

alias char-major-195* nvidia
options nvidia NVreg_EnableAGPSBA=1 NVreg_EnableAGPFW=1

Then, add 'agp=off' to the kernel parameters in grub.conf:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.18-1.2849.fc6 ro root=LABEL=/1 agp=off

Then re-boot.

Then check:

$ cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
Status: Enabled
Driver: NVIDIA
AGP Rate: 4x
Fast Writes: Enabled
SBA: Enabled

HTH.

to nvidia devs: any progress regarding this annoying bug???

to mschwarz: thumbs-up for posting a detailed how-to for this. As for the performance increase, glxgears didn't change much for me either, but compiz did receive a good performance boost. I launch compiz as follows:

compiz --indirect-rendering --loose-binding --replace gconf

without --indirect-rendering performance is even better (noticeable when playing a video for instance), but you get more black windows.
