Default Would like advice on GPU OCing and the best, safest software to use.

I haven't OCed my graphics card yet and would like to start cause i'll be stuck with this card for a while. Anyway I just need the basic beginner info on GPU overclocking. Whats the best software to use, safest methods, how far can i go etc.

To give a bit of info on my graphics card. It's an XFX 7800GTX 256MB 475MHz (factory OC). Idles at around 39/40C, and max load is bout 69/70C. Need to take into account summer weather. However won't be too dramatic where i live (Ireland).

Thanks.

Welp. Riva Tuner is good. It is praised by many. ATI Tool is good also, even comes with a built in Artifacts tester. (When you go to far and you end up with pixels out of place or something similar indicating you have gone passed the safe zone). Or, just regular old Nvidia control panel will work. If you got the old control panel, I hate the new one.

Never do the find optimal speeds. They are usually off, and don't guarantee stability.

Start slow and work your way up with small increments. Testing along the way to make sure things work. Also check what other peoples temperatures are. I have no idea what is a safe temperature for you card.

Google for this "how to overclock a video card"

You will find many articles on how to do so. There are are hundreds of good sites out there, so no need to go into detail here.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah ive heard alot bout riva tuner and of ATI tool so I might try one of them. However I would prefer to do it through the nv control panel but I looked for ages and i couldnt find the option (on the old one). Do you know?

Have done alot of googling on GPU ocing but im not getting the info i want. I need to know the very best software to use that wont hog resources or mess with the registry and is really safe.

I havent been able to find anyone with my card! I have no way of knowing the best temps on this exact card, but i thought it would be fairly universal with nvidia cards.

Search for "coolbits" its a .reg file. You run it, it changes a couple settings for the nvidia control panel in the registry unlocking the overclocking features.

Check out http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1803
it goes into overclocking with both the Nvidia Control panel and Riva Tuner.

One way to tell if the card is running too hot is you will increase the mhz speed. Benchmark without any artifacts but the bench mark score goes down. If this happens the video card is running too hot and throttles itself down.

Hey thanks for that link. I got that done and i have already OCed my core clock to 481 from 475mhz. Running a bit hot though i think. 45C idle. Only running about 69C load though but I havent touched the memory clock yet so that will probly add to the overall temp.

Anyway thanks man. I'll report back with what i manage to reach.

Okay so result is 484/1300 (from 475/1250 stock). Stable through 3dmark06 and higher score, no artifacts, nothin I can probly go higher cause i didnt try for the max stable overclock, but i think i'll leave it where its at for now.

At the moment temps are 42C idle / about 70C load. If you think I can push it further let me know, cause strangely they seem very similar to stock temps Thats a good thing though, of course

Anyway thanks again.

That isn't a very high overclock, so the temperatures won't go that much higher.. go in increments of 5-10Mhz at a time, but you might want to get a better cooler for your card if you're worried about the heat. If you're too worried about it, you shouldn't be overclocking in the first place. You'll barely see a performance difference how you have your settings currently.

I know its not very high, thought I may as well get a bit out of it. Heat is the reason im not going to OC any further and tbh i think it's a waste of money grabbing a GPU cooler, especially when i havent got a very good card. I just recently got a Zalman CPU cooler so i don't really want to go and get another cooler.

Actually guys what do you think of this nifty 7800GTX cooling mod I just came across: http://www.xoxideforums.com/745893-post1.html

Seems really easy and surprisingly effective, I could OC my 7800GTX a good bit further with this fan mod. What do you think of it? I have the old AMD stock cooling fan so can jump straight into it. Think it's worth doing?

You can give it a try. Thats how my 8800 GTS is. And I did that same thing with my x1900GT.
I found those plate covers trapped the heat inside. Didn't provide near enough air flow. I took them off and slapped a case fan on it and lowered my temps by quite a bit.
My Overclocked 8800 gts idles at 53c and tops out at 63c under load.

Instead of going out and paying 50 bucks for a cooler. I took a fan out of my junk computer parts box and lowered my temps for free

I even did it with my case. Cut a hole in the side and slapped a fan in there which helped lower my temps too.

How I mounted the fans on the video card tho I used coated wire, and spots on the Heat Sink/Card where the wire would not interfere with anything, and that where sturdy enough to hold it into place when tightened.

If I plan on selling it down the road I won't end up with a chewed up heat sink fins or something from screws.

Cool I'll give it a go then. It's about time i got into modding lol! The ol' 7800GTX is perfect to practice on

Although this is the only spare fan i have around at the moment, do you think i would benifit more by drilling it to the side window of my case?
