I also just tried downgrading to the (ubuntu supplied) 8776 drivers, the problem still exists.

I have the same problem with the 9746 drivers.
I do not get 3D acceleration. The openGL application runs on the cpu.
If I downgrade to the 7667 drivers, I get 3D acceleration, but the driver does not support widescreen displays. I only get 1280x1024 resolution and not 1680x1050.
Drivers prior to 7667 give me 3D acceleration. Any drivers after 7667 do not give 3D acceleration even if I use a resolution of 1280x1024.

I also have a GeForce FX5200.
