Question Can't start multiple X sessions

Hi,
I bought a 1680x1050 monitor and updated my drivers from 7676 to 9631 assuming it would be easier to set the resolution correctly. It wouldn't let me install the newest drivers since I have a GeForce4.

It was easier to set the resolution, but now I can't create multiple X sessions via KDE's "Start New Session" option. The screen goes blank and I have a frozen cursor in the upper left corner.

It doesn't seem frozen. If I hit cnt+alt+delete it restarts, but I don't have another computer to log in from and I can't switch to virtual consoles so I can't find out what's going on.

I tried the 9629 drivers as well and the same thing happens.

Is this a bug? Do I have the wrong drivers? I can't make sense of some of the drivers in the archive. For instance the the May 22,2006 driver is 1.0-8762 while the June 26, 2006 driver is 1.0-7182 which is going the wrong direction. There are a couple of places where the versions jump around.

I could use the 7676 drivers, but I like the new GUI with the newer drivers and with the old ones my monitor reports a refresh rate of 59.8 which is probably unimportant but I don't like anyhow. What drivers do I need to have the new GUI and have my X server not crash?

Running SuSE 10.0, kernel 2.6.13-15.13, Xorg 6.8.2, GeForce4 MX 420

Thanks,
Justin

Was this problem present when the bug report was generated?

Have you verified that you're using the latest BIOS for your system?

Also, you're not running the latest driver (1.0-9631), you're running 1.0-9629 in your bug report.

Thanks,
Lonni

I was using 1.0-9631 when I first had the problem. I downgraded to 1.0-9629 to see if that version had the problem too, and it did. I reinstalled 1.0-9631 and my comments and files in this post refer to that version.

The bug report was generated after I rebooted but before X started.
I got another computer to log in while the problem was happening to run the bug report, but the bug report freezes. From what ps aux tells me, it looks like it freezes at this step.

cat /proc/drivers/nvidia/cards/0

If I try to run that command myself during the hangup, it freezes and cannot be killed (Something I don't think I've ever seen happen). After a restart, it works fine. I also can't kill X. Chaning runlevels (init 3 and init 1) appears to work, but they don't kill the X server or the frozen cat command, and after changing runlevels my screen stays blank. The only way to regain control is to reboot.

I've attached another bug report, still from after a reboot but before X since it freezes otherwise. I've also attached the output from dmesg, from right after the hangup (during the problem, before a reboot), and the relevant output of /var/log/warn (copy/pasted the messages generated during the X session). /var/log/warn mentions not being able to open a display.
