gilboa,
Thanks, I've reproduced the crash using your bug report. This is actually a known bug, and will be fixed in the next driver release.

I was surprised to find that BETA driver 9742 fixes this problem but that official driver 9746 has this problem. Did the fix get lost in the production release? Will the fix make it's way to the official releases?

I don't understand the question. 1.0-9746 is an official release.

9746, the official release, has the bug where firefox causes x.org to freeze up when visiting certain pages (the pages do not contain java or flash...as described earlier in this thread).

9742, the BETA release, does not have this bug.

If 9746 was supposed to have the bugfix then there has been a regression.

Perhaps this is a new related bug. The nature of the freeze is that everything in X.org but the mouse freezes up (but SSH access still works fine). After a patient wait of around 5 minutes or so things unfreeze without a reboot. One website that triggers this is www.porkiesfestival.org (hover the mouse over several of the items on the left hand side and it triggers the freeze without fail). I am using an FX5700LE with video bios 4.36.20.29.00.

8776 (debian etch's current official version) had the bug. 9746 (the current official version) has the bug. 9742 (the current BETA) does not have the bug. Somewhere between 9742 and 9746 something regressed.

Hmm. Never mind me. I just reinstalled 9746 from nvidia.com so I could post some bug-report log output and the bug I described is not present. Everything is fine. Earlier I had installed 9746 from debian's unstable tree and it had the bug. Apparently there is something wrong with Debian's packaging of 9746 and NOT something from with 9746 itself.

Sorry for wasting your time.
