Default Re: Gentoo, nvidia-drivers 9631 - X fatal server error

What makes it so strange is that there are no errors. GLX just flat out stops X from loading and leaves it at that. I'm able to use X fine if I disable glx, but I can't use all of the cool eyecandy or any OpenGL... this can't be a system specific issue...

It looks like a Gentoo specific issue, as that seems to be the commonality amongst everyone reporting it (yet not all Gentoo users are seeing it).

Hello there,

I use gentoo with 2.6.18 kernel /gentoo-sources
nvidia-drivers 9631
and an agp 6200 card (Asus)

I do have the same issue as all of you, everything is okay when I comment the GLX option in xorg.conf (but I cannot use it in my KDE desktop of course).

And when I load it, X hangs on a black screen with some weird green lines. Firstly I noticed I forget to compile xorg with the nvidia video card FLAG in make.conf (only nv was used).
After that, X hangs on a black screen, with a grey line at the top of the screen (so except on this small details, it means nothing works at all).

Then, I thought it was something wrong with my hardware so I tried the nvidia card on another gentoo station, taking out the ATI card... but I have the same problem...

I honestly hope that once someone will find how to solve this, he will remember to post the solution here !!!!

Nota, when X crashes, my Xorg.0.log last line is
backtrace:
then nothing else (does it have something to do with 'debug' use flag of xorg ???)

Not being an expert but the numbers after the backtrace must mean something and help someone in the know?

Is this a memory reference to the failed function?

Default Bug, backtrace

Well I've been digging about for older versions to try, and came across this bug report in the Gentoo system: http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=154536

It seems to be the same issue, but more interestingly, they have debugging on, and it shows the following in Xorg.0.log:

Code:
*snip*
(II) Initializing extension GLX

Backtrace:
0: /usr/bin/X(xf86SigHandler+0x7f) [0x48214f]
1: /lib/libc.so.6 [0x2aca87fe8820]
2: /usr/lib64/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.1 [0x2aca8957965e]

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

(II) Screen 0 shares mem & io resources
(II) Screen 1 shares mem & io resources
So perhaps that can help someone?

EDIT: I also found that nvidia legacy drivers make my system hard freeze. Black screen, then nothing.

My Xorg.0.log is the same as funtea's and I have debugging turned on. It gets to initializing GLX then says backtrace but gives no information. So I've no clue where to go from there.

Well its working now. An update may have fixed it, not really sure. Heres what I did:

Code:
# emerge nvidia-legacy-drivers
# lsmod | grep nvidia && rmmod nvidia
# modprobe nvidia
# modules-update
# nano -w /etc/X11/xorg.conf
     Section "Module"
       (...)
       # Load "dri"
       Load "glx"
       (...)
     EndSection
# eselect opengl set nvidia
Loaded up X and did a "glxgears" and everything is working great now...

Hello everyone. I had this problem for a month ago, but i solved it yesterday.
I don`t why it is working now, but it is working ("glxinfo|grep direct" = "direct rendering: Yes")

So, here is my magic commands list (magic, becose i don`t know why they work )
Code:
# emerge -C nvidia-drivers
# rm /etc/modules.d/nvidia
# emerge =x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-1.0.8776
... (modules-update, eselect ...)
# USE="-dri" emerge =x11-base/xorg-server-1.1.1-r4
And of course no "Load dri" in xorg.conf.

Here is my configuration
Code:
# uname -a
Linux localhost 2.6.17-gentoo-r4 #8 SMP Fri Aug 18 03:00:17 GMT 2006 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 2800+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux
# emerge -pv nvidia-drivers
[ebuild R ] x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-1.0.8776 USE="dlloader" 0 kB
# emerge -pv xorg-server
[ebuild R ] x11-base/xorg-server-1.1.1-r4 USE="ipv6 nptl sdl xorg -3dfx -aiglx -debug -dmx -dri -kdrive -minimal -xprint" INPUT_DEVICES="keyboard mouse -acecad -aiptek -calcomp -citron -digitaledge -dmc -dynapro -elo2300 -elographics -evdev -fpit -hyperpen -jamstudio -joystick -magellan -microtouch -mutouch -palmax -penmount -spaceorb -summa -synaptics -tek4957 -ur98 -vmmouse -void -wacom" VIDEO_CARDS="nv nvidia -apm -ark -chips -cirrus -cyrix -dummy -epson -fbdev -fglrx -glint -i128 -i740 -i810 (-impact) -imstt -mach64 -mga -neomagic (-newport) -nsc -r128 -radeon -rendition -s3 -s3virge -savage -siliconmotion -sis -sisusb (-sunbw2) (-suncg14) (-suncg3) (-suncg6) (-sunffb) (-sunleo) (-suntcx) -tdfx -tga -trident -tseng -v4l -vesa -vga -via -vmware -voodoo"
My video card is GF6600.

May be it works becose of new version of xorg-server (1.1.1-r4). I don`t know.

P.S. Sorry for my bad english
