Unhappy Inspiron 2650 Resolution Problem

Hello all!

I'll get right to it: I have a Dell Inspiron 2650 running RH 7.3 and Gnome 1.4. I have successfully installed nvidia's drivers and X works perfectly, HOWEVER, I cannot, no matter what I try get X to display at any better of a resolution than 1024x768! I've searched the forums here for a couple of days, and found out that while many people have been successful with getting their Dells to work with the "laptop resolution" (1400x1050?), none of them have the Inspiron 2650. I cannot find any doc to tell me if I am limited by my hardware (the LCD itself) or not. Can anyone point me in the right direction on this? I'm sorry I do not have an X config to show you, but I'm away from the laptop now. It is, however, pretty much a stock config generated by Anaconda with the driver changed to "nvidia" per the README file.

The problem is one of:

1) Your refresh rate settings (VertRefresh and HorizSync) are set too low

2) Your video card doesn't have enough memory for a higher mode -- try lowering the color depth; if that works, then this is the problem

3) Something else

Posting your /var/log/XFree86.0.log file from the middle of a successful X session would help immensely...

Josh, the 2650 simply cannot do modes above 1024x768 in any OS (hey, how do you think they got a 1.6ghz/512MB/40GB/G2Go system so cheap? answer: they skimped out on everything else).

Sounds like you have an XGA panel, which is limited to 1024x768. Your EDID might be able to tell you - start X with
startx -- -logverbose 5
and look at the EDID information printed out in /var/log/XFree86.0.log.
