Default Printer driver/sharing Issue on Vista/XP

Ok, where to start.

I have a Canon PiXMA ip5000 printer, I had this printer for about 2 years now. Not a single issue with a printer before i moved to vista.

Before in XP, I had it connected to my main PC using x86 driver on XP, and it was shared over network with 3 other PCs (2 XP x86 [laptop and family pc] + 1 x64 XP machine), everything was perfect. Now that I installed Vista 64bit, downloaded 64bit Vista driver from Canon.com, and printer works great from Vista. Went into printer settings and set up printer sharing, all other PCs on the network can see the printer. But here is where the program starts, computers will connect to the printer, and then it will ask for the driver.

I use the excact same driver I used before, and guess what? every single XP machines complains that the XP driver doesn't have required hardware information, and won't install.

HELP!

So you were using the x64 driver before in XP x86? Kinda confused there....

I'd say your problem is that XP x86 doesn't like the Vista x64 driver. So I think this is what you have to do (I haven't tried this because I don't have this problem) is go into printer properties (control panel > printers > right click which ever printer you're sharing > properties) and then goto the sharing tab there is a button at the bottom called "Additional Drivers". It says it is for sharing the printer with different operating systems...On mine if I go into it, it says the x86 driver is installed (I'm running Vista x86) and lets me add the x64 driver as well as an Itanium driver. So for you I bet it has the x64 driver checked and the x86 driver unchecked.

I hope this makes sense....it's pure speculation on my part too...I don't have an x64 OS to test this on.

no no, i didn't say i was using x64 driver on 86 xp

ok, let me try to explain better.

i got 4 machines: MAIN: Vista x64, Family: XP x86, Laptop: XP x86 and TestPC: XP x64

printer is hooked up to the Vista, installed with Vista x64 driver, printer sharing is set up in vista. All other 3 PCs on the network can see the printer and connect to it, but all 3 other PCs will ask for the driver.

When i point XP x86 machine to the XP x86 driver, it gives me message that the driver is for wrong hardware. When I point XP x64 machine to XP x64 driver it also will say that is for wrong hardware.

After hooking up the printer to Vista and Installing Vista driver, while network sharing that printer, it will not accept XP drivers on XP machines. SAME EXCACT DRIVER THAT WORKED BEFORE

Ah, I now I understand. But I have no clue how to fix that...my Canon i860 shares fine over my network. But I'm running Vista x86.
