8800GTS Slow?!

24931 at default settings. This time the only app I had running in the background was IE7 w/ only 1 tab open (nVnews).

18837 w/ everything maxed (1920x1440, 16xAA, 16xAF, TAA & GCAA enabled, etc).

Seems a bit low to me. Hmm...

A bit low is an understatement. Those are the type of scores I'm getting, low to mid 20s. This card should easily be nearly double.

Redeemed: how does it perform for you in the games you mentioned? (I'm assuming you have the 8800GTS, right? What are your system specs? Please share.)

This is troubling because I cannot move on to useful workloads until I know it is running correctly.

Well, my system is poorly configured to be honest.

I'm running a s754 3400 on the EPoX 8NPA-Sli mobo, with 2GB DDR500 ram (@ DDR500).

I know my CPU is a huge bottleneck for theset two cards (yes, I'm running dual 8800GTSs). But in '01 I doubt my CPU would be that huge of an issue. So I'm not sure what the culprit is. Latest drivers, latest BIOS update, etc. I'm going to be upgrading in a few weeks to a better setup (ASUS A8N32 SLi mobo+ Opty 185) and I'll re-test then to see if that changes anything. I'm wanting to run Vista x64 (Ultimate) on that setup so I'll try it under XP and Vista to see what's up.

I scored a 30105 with max settings, vsync off, but it was with the basic free version of 3dmark2001se.

See, you have one GTS, I have two. You'd think my score would be in the 50's or so- wouldn't you?

Anyhow, I don't fare very well in any of the 3DMark tests. In '03 I get about 30k actually, but that's the only one where my score is kinda' high.

Who knows why my scores are so low. My game performance is definitely a lot better than my 3DMark scores would indicate though, so I'm happy.

I know what you mean. I used to live by these things, but I don't pay much attention to them anymore, so yeah, as long as my games run great and look great, I'm happy.

Nope, GPU performance has little to do with the 3dmark01 score nowadays. Try overclocking your cpu even a little and I bet you'll see a pretty huge jump.
3dmark01 should only be used to test the performance of your cpu, while 3dmark06 is better suited for testing gpu performance. I bet that even a 9800pro could get the same score as you on the same cpu.

Quick followup in case any one else runs into similar issues..

Two problems were discovered.

First my motherboard was "broken". It did not have the correct chipset/configuration that should have been part of its PCB revision.

Second, agreed the 2001se score is more CPU limited than GPU, but in this case the FSB was running only 1/2 speed due to this Dempsey model.

This was not tied to power consumption, or insufficient current.

Hey, I hadn't even thought of that!

My bad. But that makes perfect sense. This CPU won't oc any more (running it at 2.5 from 2.4) so- oh well. Got the Opty185 already- just waiting on the new mobo.
