I dont remember if you have a ubuntu system but i have it and these are installation istructions for me:
1. from synaptics search and install linux-image-xxx and linux-headers-xxx where xxx is kernel version (if you don't know it, type uname -r in terminal)

2. from synaptics search and install pkg-config xserver-xorg-dev

3. start linux in recovery mode (so without graphic interface).

4. type sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia-glx nvidia-settings nvidia-kernel-common
5. type sudo rm /etc/init.d/nvidia-*
6. type sudo apt-get --purge remove linux-restricted-modules-`uname -r`
(pay attenction are ` and not ' )
7. type sudo nvidia-installer --uninstall
8. reinstall nvidia beta driver and select yes when the installer ask you if it can modify xorg.conf.

Everybody is alright now with nvidia driver or did you just give up writing on the forum?!

Things are much better now with latest releases (actually I'm working with the beta drivers), but I still experience some hang-ups...

At this time I use the driver ver. 1.0-9629 on kubuntu edgy amd64.
There are much better than previosus, but still remain some problems(somtimes a 3d application crash or the X manager restart, but nt like the previous release)
Now I have to install the new version ( rel. 4 Dec ) 9631.

Today I installed etch with kernel 2.6.18-3-amd64 with driver 1.0-9631. I'm still having the same problems.

I've been working without nvidia drivers for two days without turning the machine off last week

Exclamation Re: Nvidia go7600 on Asus laptop

Important for Ubuntu users (new problems):
Please note that there are some problems with nvidia drivers and the updated kernel ver. 2.6.17.1-10.34 on ubuntu (see this link http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=318206).
If possible don't update the kernel at this moment !

This 'problem' looks like an Ubuntu bug.
