My new installation of Quake4 1.4 will run, but it runs far too slowly to be playable. This was also the case with Quake 4 1.3.
I am running Debian Sid amd64 with the 2.6.18-4-amd64 kernel. I have an Abit KN8 Ultra motherboard with an Athlon XP+ 3200. My video card is an Nvidia 7600 GT. I am using the Nvidia driver for Linux, version 1.0-9746. For Debian, this is in the experimental repository and is maintained by Randall Donald, http://packages.qa.debian.org/n/nvid...s-drivers.html. I would bet the 1.0.9746 version would be in unstable if Debian had made the release date for Etch. But it's still frozen. Anyway, the unstable and testing version of the driver is 1.0.8776-4. glxgears returns an average frame rate of approximately 16,812 FPS. I've been asking what might be the problem on Linuxquestions.org and googling for possible solutions, but this is definitely beyond my feeble powers. I'm assuming that 'vertex array in virtual memory' is a key to the problem. I have attached a copy of nvidia-bug-report.log. Can anyone offer me any advice? Thank you much. --------------- R_InitOpenGL ---------------- Initializing SDL subsystem Loading GL driver 'libGL.so.1' through SDL SDL_ListModes: 1280x1024 1280x960 1280x800 1280x768 1152x864 1152x768 1024x768 840x525 832x624 800x600 800x512 720x450 720x400 640x512 640x480 640x400 640x384 640x350 576x432 576x384 512x384 416x312 400x300 360x200 320x240 320x200 320x175 SDL_ListModes are currently ignored for resolution filtering. You're only having issues with Q4? Other 3D-accelerated apps work fine?

No, I'm able to play Nexiuz and Sauerbraten (Cube 2), and both games perform very well.
I haven't had any other problems. Even with all of the effects turned off and the resolution set for 640x480, Quake 4 is simply unplayable. This was the case with Quake 4 for linux 1.3. Now, with Quake 4 linux 1.4, the game is still far too slow and none of the npc dialogue is working. The audio issues I figure I can work on elsewhere, but the video continues to be beyond my feeble powers to remedy. Thanks for the reply. |

Wow.
Talk about frustrating. I was messing around with the settings in my xorg.conf file to see if I could make the monitor behave properly if I used modeline settings with the timing set taken from an online gtf calculator that I found. Needless to say, setting the modelines was a disaster that caused the LCD to completely refuse to display anything. So, I rebooted in single user mode, reset the xorg.conf to an older version (from a day or two before), et voila! It worked. Now, I can set the monitor resolution to 1280x1024 or 1024x768 like I wanted. I am still not 100% certain why it worked. I believe the old conf file worked because I included Option "UseEDID" "FALSE" in the monitor section. But that is conjecture on my part. After using three different NVidia drivers, two different versions of X and spending several days of going nowhere, it appears that changing one line solved my most immediate problem. Now, if I could only get Quake 4 to run properly. Last edited by bigvig209; 03-28-07 at 01:27 PM. Reason: Changed title |
