Default FX-5200 Xorg hangs (WAIT + NVRM XID) with Nvidia binary drivers

For some months I've experiencing Xorg lookups (complete X server freeze. Hardware cursor remains). Usually they happen when the computer is cold booted. After some seconds of X use (Gnome) [time interval is variable and seems to be somehow related to how hard X is used; for example, leaving the Gnome desktop just sit right there, hang just does not happen; loading Firefox and using it with various tabs makes X hard lock in just a few seconds] X complete locks. Terminal is unrecoverable. Remote logging to system shows the rest is working OK, and the system can be reseted. Three to four more resets are needed as hard X lock remains but then after 5th reset (more or less) X does not lock more. If lock does not happen in the very few minutes, no lock will happen in the rest of the session (system remains forever stable).

Cannot confirm what change was made to the system which make this locks start happening but I clearly remember this system had been rock stable for more than 6 months.

This behaviour is independent of Xorg version. Has been verified to happen with 6.8.2 and 7.1.1. Also seems GCC version independent: 6.8.2 was compiled with gcc 3.3.6. 7.1.1 has been compiled with 4.1.1.

Last nvidia binary driver versions have this problem: confirmed in 8774 and 8762. Both running in 2.6.17 kernels.

Locks are AGP independent. Last driver (8774) has been tested with NvAGP = 2 and NvAGP = 0 and both options showed same locking behaviour. Also seems not related to running videos thru Xv or OpenGL use as the lock can be triggered just by surfing a Web with firefox (Render extension?).

I've already taken a look at this forums. Many users reported similar problems but: a.) They're solved using NvAGP = 0 (not my case) b.) They we're triggered because of Xv use (not my case). c.) They we're triggered because of OpenGL use (not my case). d.) Dual head configs? (not my case).

Attached is nvidia-bug-report.log (bzipped due to excedeeing of max forum file attach size). bug-reportl.sh tool found the XID msgs in kernel log but not the WAIT ones in Xorg log files. I'm writing them here:

(WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 6, 0x8000, 0x0000c534, 0x0000c55c, 0)
(WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (1, 6, 0x8000, 0x0000c534, 0x0000c55c, 0)
(WW) NVIDIA(0): WAIT (2, 6, 0x8000, 0x0000c534, 0x0000c724, 0)

Hardware:
Gigabyte Via KT800 based S754 motherboard. AMD Sempron 2800+ (one of those with 64 bit support). Running x86-32 system, so most entries in stability FAQ do not apply.

Does anyone have any clue?
TIA.

I've been thinking a little more of what change could made my system so unstable. I've realized that aproximately when hangs began 512 more MBytes of RAM was added to my system. The RAM has been tested with memtest and now errors arise (so memory itsel should not be the problem). Has anyone experienced hangs due to high memory support activation in kernel?

Also I doubt hardware is the problem as in Windows everything is PERFECTLY stable.

Regards

I have exactly the same problem. When cold booting and then starting X it just hangs at the KDE initialization window (this is partially show and I can't do anything more). It seems like my system is still running but the graphics are totally crashed. Before I was using KDE I had this problem when starting firefox as it was described here. When I do a reset (the only possibility to shutdown...) and then reboot then everything runs very stable and I have no crashes at all, no matter how long I use X or how often I exit and enter again. I also confirmed this with the three latest versions of the nvidia driver including the new beta driver, using Xorg 6.8 - 7.1 and gcc 3.4 - 4.1. It would be really nice if this bug would be resolved in the new driver, since this is quite annoying... If I wouldn't know better I would say that something is not right initialized the first time, but this state is saved on the graphics card for some time...

My system: AMD Sempron(TM) 2300+, NVIDIA FX-5200.

The only new thing that is new with the beta driver is that my system also was crashing sometimes when using beryl with AIGLX. But this is probably due to the beta status of the driver and of beryl (at least I hope so).

Attached are 4 nvidia-bugreports zipped into one file: one for each crashing of the 3 driver versions and one when it is working. Also the 9625 crashing log does not have the following lines in the system log:

Does this problem reproduce without beryl?
Have you verified that you're using the latest BIOS for the motherboard?
Does the problem persist if you set NvAGP to 0 in xorg.conf?

Thanks,
Lonni

Yes, the "first boot crash" reproduces without beryl. But with beryl I sometimes get crashes after I rebooted wereas with just using kde and kwin my system is stable after this first reboot. Yes, I tried NvAGP=0 with no effect and also the BIOS version is the most recent (at least I think so).

It sounds like this only reproduces with beryl from your last comment.

What kind of motherboard are you using, and which BIOS version?

I just checked. I use an ASUS A7V8X-X with the BIOS version 1013. This should be the latest one.

Same MB, same problem.

I have an old Geforce4 MX440, bot the problem seems to have something to do with the Motherboard. Any idea on what could be causing this ?

If you boot with the acpi=off and/or noapic kernel parameters, does that have any impact?

Thanks,
Lonni

i too had this problem on x86-64, so far it appears to have been fixed, another thread recommended turning off UseEvents, which wasn't enabled for me however the advice about turning off apic, (noapic and nolapic on the kernel commandline) seems to have solved the problem for me

UPDATE:
turns out it hasn't completely solved it, though it happens much less frequently now.

I've got the same (or at least a similar) Problem with the following Hardware:
- GeForce FX 5200 (GeForce 8800 GT 512 NV34) with 128 MB RAM
- Chipset: VIA KT133:
Code:
00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8363/8365 [KT133/KM133] (rev 03)
00:01.0 PCI bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8363/8365 [KT133/KM133 AGP]
- CPU: AMD Duron 1 GHz (family 6 model 7 stepping 0)

The system does not hang completely, it just runs extremely slow, Xorg consuming 98% CPU. Login via SSH is possible, so I can watch the xorg and dmesg logs slowly progress.

The X log shows repeated attempts to initialize AGP.

This happens every time I start X with the "nvidia" driver active, regardless of "NvAGP" setting to "1" or having "via_agp" loaded.

Some additional information:
- Debian Lenny / Sid with Glibc 2.7
- Debain Kernel 2.6.26-1-686 with precompiled .deb driver package
- The "NVRM XID" kernel messages occur when starting X, but seem to stop at some point (only a few lines), but there are endless attempts to initialize AGP in the Xorg log.

It seems that my problem differs a bit from the previous posts, but it seems rather similar (always AMD K7 architecture, if I remember correctly; X itsself hangs; the kernel messages are identical)

Christoph
