The LD_PRELOAD thing doesn't work for me either. However, using the driver package from NVIDIA does.

This leads me to the conclusion that this is a livna build problem.

It might be that Beryl is trying to directly use /usr/lib64/libGL.so (Mesa lib) instead of the nVidia library and the LD_PRELOAD worked for that guy.

If this is the case, then it is definitely a Beryl bug.

This also affects the freshrpms.net RPM of the nVidia driver (which self-generates on a new kernel upgrade, which is better than Livna) so it seems that it might be Beryl is looking for the wrong libGL.

So, I got the LD_PRELOAD fix to work (I had to delete some remaining 9625 files). Lots of other people have got this to work.

Does this mean the bug was beryl's problem all along? If so, I am really annoyed by their developers reponses and the fact they blame nvidia!

If explicitly setting LD_PRELOAD to point to the nvidia driver's OpenGL eliminates the problem, then it certainly can't be an nvidia driver bug.

Link them to this thread... this is not a nVidia driver bug.

It should be a simple fix.

OK. this is NOT an nvidia bug.. This IS A bug in the beryl build process.

which I run ldd on beryl I get that libGL.so.1 is pointing to /usr/lib64. The NVIDIA RPM packages I am using put the nvidia libGL.so.1 in /usr/lib64/nvidia.. the ldconfig environment is configured correctly for this.. However during the building of beryl the rpath was set on beryl.

When I run chrpath -l /usr/bin/beryl I get
/usr/bin/beryl: RPATH=/usr/lib64

when I run it on /usr/bin/glxgears I get (of which ldd shows the correct libGL.so)
/usr/bin/glxgears: no rpath or runpath tag found.

After running
chrpath -d /usr/bin/beryl

ldd now shows the correct libGL.so.1 and beryl correctly works. This *NOT* an nvidia issue, but a beryl build issue.

I have added this post to the bug report on beryl's website (#848)

If they close your bug (by calling it a "nvidia bug") let us know and I'll raise hell.

I resolved this changing /usr/bin/startgnomexgl.sh from
Xgl -fullscreen :1 -ac -accel glxbuffer -accel xvbuffer & sleep 2 && DISPLAY=:1

to
Xgl -fullscreen :0 -ac -br -accel glxbuffer -accel xv:fbo & sleep 2 && DISPLAY=:0

Since they've closed the Beryl bug I've opened a bug with Red Hat as they claim it is a Fedora packaging problem.

Fedora pushed a new set of Beryl packages today that corrected the problem for me.

SOLVED:
I had the same white screen problem on FC6(32bit)+Beryl

I fixed it not by initiating beryl with --indirect-rendering, not --use-copy.

e.g. (in a terminal):
beryl --indirect-rendering

Then I was able to load beryl-manager no sweat. It was *a lot* faster and smoother thatn using --use-copy.

I hope that helps.

Update: I switched from XGL to aiglx (?) (what Mandriva calls "native") and it seems to work fine with beryl --replace

I get the white screen on 9755 and beryl 0.20 on Mandriva ia32 cooker unless I have --use-copy. The --indirect-rendering flag didn't help [this flag is not for xgl, but the other mode]. Libs seem fine, and chrpath doesn't show anything. /usr/lib/libGL.* point at the 9755 lib file. I've been at this and Google for a few hours now. Have I overlooked something simple? It it very cool, but slow with the use-copy flag!
