Default Intel Wipes Out AMD's 2006 Marketshare Gains in One Quarter

Quote:
Intel picks up 6% during one quarter in the overall PC market

The price war that is waging between Intel and AMD paid off handsomely for Intel in the first quarter according to the latest numbers from Mercury Research. Intel managed to capture 80.5 percent of the PC processor market for Q1 2007.

The strong performance by Intel in Q1 represents a whopping 6 percentage point increase from the 74.4 percent share that the company held during Q4 2006. The increases per segment come in at 8 percent for the desktop market, 4 percent for the notebook market and 7 percent for the server market.

Last year, AMD was quick to point out its strong growth in all computing segments. For the third quarter, AMD's share of the desktop, notebook and server markets stood at 26.5 percent, 18.3 percent and 24.4 percent respectively. The company's overall marketshare for Q3 2006 came in at 23.3%. For Q4 2006, that share rose to 25.3 percent.

Intel erased all of AMD's 2006 gains and pushed the company back under the 20 percent threshold. Analysts for JP Morgan reported that "Intel's superior products and aggressive pricing took their toll on AMD. We expect AMD to lose additional share during (the second quarter)."

AMD has responded to the best of its ability to Intel's strong Core 2-based product family and the company's steady stream of price cuts. By going toe-to-toe with Intel, however, AMD has seen its average selling prices (ASPs) fall along with unit sales.

The company also made a critical error by oversupplying OEMs with processors when they couldn't deliver on sales forecasts while at the same time leaving channel partners out to dry with processor supply. "We made a strategic risk on how we shifted our capacity to serve our customers and unfortunately some of our customers were not able to meet those very aggressive growth areas that they had so when we shifted that, we were not able to recover as fast this quarter as we would have liked," said AMD CEO Hector Ruiz in early March.

The increased pricing pressure along with disappointing sales from OEM coupled with the strong performance of dual-core and quad-core processors from Intel has taken its toll on AMD. The company posted a $611 million USD net loss in Q1 2007 and announced that it would restructure its business to cut costs.

Despite this terrible news, AMD's stock price actually went up.

AMD... I love you baby...

Unfortunately, I love my E6600 more. These Core 2's are just too damn good.

Come on AMD. Get Barcelona on the market and put intel back in their place please. I couldn't bare to see intel push the market into a monopoly by killing off you guys.

Well blame AMD for their worst mistakes they made too many processors. It no way they can push Barcelona to the market today until OEMs clearing AMD processors inventories, when it clearing then AMD can clearing excess inventory of their CPUs and after that AMD can finally deliver Barcelona to OEMs. If OEMs cant dry the current AMD CPU inventory by Q3 2007 then AMD will go out of business.

Also keep this in mind guys...besides just the C2D, customers that bought 754's and 939's are (in the last few months) starting to come in asking to upgrade thier CPU. They have switched sockets like crazy during thier dominance and I can tell you first hand it is pissing the average do it your selfer (not enthusiast) off. "I'd like to upgrade my processor."..."OK, what socket, ram and video card?"..."It's a 754 with ddr400 and an 6800AGP card." ...."Oh...I'm sorry, your going to have to replace your processor, motherboard, memory and video card to upgrade"...Not good...Hopefully AMD will stick with AM2 for a bit and release Barcelona to compete with Intel...Otherwise it's going to be dark times at AMD for a while...

Agena will be on AM2+, which is backwards compatible with AM2. So no, AMD isn't introducing a completely new socket. Those with AM2 boards will not be SOL.

Well one day AMD will release higher clock CPU that will need HyperTransport 3.0 only, it wont work with AM2 motherboard which use HyperTransport 2.0. The difference with AM2 and AM2+ motherboard are AM2 use old HyperTransport 2.0 and AM2+ use new HyperTransport 3.0 as well as DDR2. Also AM3 motherboard will use HyperTransport 3.0 and combined of DDR2 and DDR3.

Agreed. Intel has been the smart one here and realeased a socket (LGA775) that has lasted for several years. The only problem is that older LGA775 boards are not compatible with the C2D's, so Intel is kind of doing what AMD did as well.

Imagine the suprise on little Timmy's face when he puts a shinny new E6300 in his 2 year old LGA775 motherboard, and the computer doesn't boot. Little Timmy is now very sad.
