When exiting X or switching to a text console the whole system freezes. You can only do a cold reset.
In /var/log/messages I see: linux kernel: mtrr: no MTRR for e0000000,2000000 found I have searched the Web and found the problem several times but NO solution. Removing this entry from /proc/mtrr and switching then doesn't help either. Can anybody help? System: linux 2.4.20, nvidia 4191, using agpgart (tried nvidia agp before), (no Fast Writes and Side Band Adressing) via kt266, geforce 3 ti 200 |

Doesn't anybody have the problem here? I thought we could get to the root of it. Perhaps the MTRR message doesn't have to do anything with it. Perhaps it's a problem with X or KDE3? It's definitely a problem with the accelerated 'nvidia' driver. It doesn't happen with 'nv' driver.
The problem doesn't occur if I switch to console after having logged in for the first time. If I log out from KDE and return to KDM X seems to get restarted. From that point I cant't get anymore back to a text console. MTRR looks like this on my 256MB system with 64MB GeForce3 TI 200 root@linux:/home/www > cat /proc/mtrr reg00: base=0x00000000 ( 0MB), size= 256MB: write-back, count=1 reg01: base=0xd8000000 (3456MB), size= 64MB: write-combining, count=1 reg05: base=0xe0000000 (3584MB), size= 64MB: write-combining, count=1 Thorsten |

I recently installed RedHat 9.
I'm now using exactly the same kernel as in the above SuSE System with NVidia Driver 4363 with the same options. There aren't these problems any more. Perhaps it has to do something with the KDE Display Manager KDM? I'm using now GDM and the former problems appeared reproduceable after logging out from KDE to KDM. Only my thoughts. I couldn't solve the problem in the SuSE system after trying for two years. Thorsten |

probably the newer driver did the trick, it's just that the nv driver doesn't use mtrr, so...
well, good luck and all... sorry I missed your thread before, I'd have given you the advice to tryout newer drivers or newer kernels...
