I need a bit of help:
I am running slackware v8.1, and have a Siluro Geforce4 t14200 64Meg I've downloaded the tarball drivers: NVIDIA_GLX-1.0.2802.tar.gz NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-2314.tar.gz I've decompressed and run "make install" on both sets of files. I updated my xf86config file changing: Driver "nv" to Driver "nvidia" added Load "glx" and made sure that Load "dri" and Load "GLcore" were not present. When I run the command lsmod, the command reports back that the ncDriver module is loaded. However, when I run startx, the screen goes black for a second, then dumps me back to console. I get an error message in my log file stating: "(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVdriver kernel module!" I've been looking all over for solutions to this problem. If anyone can help, please respond. Thanks |

try this in text-based mode: "insmod NVdriver"
You will see that he loads the driver and when you do the "startx" X will boot, i had the same problem, but not anymore Now i want to load the driver when i boot, does someone know how to?

xenoael check /var/log/messages or other files there for strange errors.
casb I'm not sure on what distro you are. Most distro's like Mandrake and Redhat use a file called modules.conf. (not all distro's default to it) To that you should add a line: alias char-major-195 NVdriver Then it will be loaded on startup. Debian uses "/etc/modules" which works a little different. |

Just FYI, I found out what was wrong with my installation, namely this:
NVIDIA_GLX-1.0.2802.tar.gz NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-2314.tar.gz those last numbers (2802 and 2314) need to match. I had assumed that they were both the most recent because they both came up as "most recent" on the download page I got them from. But they were not, and the fact that they didnt match caused the problem. If anyone else runs into this problem, make sure to check the version numbers. -Xenoael |
