I'd just like to put forth the idea, in case no one has thought of it, that perhaps Nvidia will see fit to contribute to and legitimize Nouveau once it's farther along in development.
Forcedeth started out just like Nouveau, as a clean room reverse-engineering of the hardware, in order to replace a closed-source driver with an open one. I think we can all agree that open-sourced drivers would be in most folk's best interests, especially considering the older generation stuff that's now forked off into the 'legacy' driver. I just hope that Nouveau will eventually become the de facto solution, and that at that time, Nvidia's engineers and developers will be freed to contribute, much as they contribute to and maintain forcedeth. Thanks for reading, bump if you agree, flames to /dev/null.

I agree - its sad that a few people have to do hard work to find out the workings of the graphics cards without being paid while the devs at nVidia who get paid for it do such a bad job. All they do is add support for new cards and abandon anything that requires the slightest bit of work ( e.g. XvMC ).
nVidia should simply let their linux devs work for Nouveau - they donīt even have to open the specs - they simply would have to let their devs work on the project so that they could do the low level hardware access. All the other features would then be done by volunteers. Would save them time, work and money. When the first company offers powerful graphics cards with open source drivers ( which I assume will be Intel when they start to produce fully featured stand alone graphics cards ) I will stick with that company forever. I don`t care if other companies are then forced to do the same - the one who starts it is worth it. BTW http://nouveau.freedesktop.org |

I notice AMD has announced that ATI drivers will shortly be open sourced. Maybe nvidia could use this as an opportunity as well.......

+1.
but I think nouveau devels are good and up to the task without the nvidia support. The point of nvidia never really changed on the subject... But who knows. Anyway open source is the future.
