Default Need upgrad advice

Hello. Long time lurker. Very infrequent poster. I'm just a little out of touch with cpu/mobo setups lately. Im a amd guy and currently sporting a amd x2 4800 paired with a Asus A8N SLI board. I just got a Asus EN8800 768mg GTX Video card. I now have the itch to upgrade the rest of my system. I also have 2 eVGA 7800gtx available btw if anyones interested . I need advice on what setup I should get. I have np getting a Intel. Im thinking the Conroe E6600 is a good price point. But what mobo and ram to go with it? I would like the mobo to be sli capable as well. Just in case I want to add another 8800 in the future. I have a good cpu cooler on my Socket 939 but will it work with the Intel chip? It's a Zalman cp7000 I believe. All questions I need some input on. Thanks guys

Well, I would say the Core2duo are bang on buck especially overclockable ones that give you 3 ghz on air from reference clocks!

The c2d's seem to be robust at overclockign therefore gaining more performance per dollar invested as members here have proven.

Ging from various sites, I would say perhaps a 6400 then overclock...or a 4400 (2 ghz vs 2.13ghz on 6400). The advantage of the cpu iu are thinking about (the 6600) is the multiplier advantage...

But going to C2D means new investment also on motehrboard and then memory! You have to possibly pair up good memory for overclocks..(although memory dividers may help in maintaining the clocks for memory lower than the overclocked FSB)

I myself am waiting till barcalona for any CPU upgrades with my X2 4400+ though.

My immedeate concern is a GPU upgrade from my 7800 GTXs in Sli

Memory prices have come down alot ,You can get some good PC2 6400C4 or PC2 8500C5 pretty cheap and the core 2 Duo E6600 is $229 now and a motherboard would be $140 for a 650i SLI .and they would make that 8800GTX fly

Here ya go Dante:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 - $225
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...ductCode=80860

Awesome CPU is made even better now that its only $225!

Motherboard: ASUS P5N32-E SLI Plus - 187$
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131153

Really good motherboard from what I've heard. Though if you dont ABSOLUTELY need SLI I'd recommend staying away from nvidia chipsets as Intel chipsets overclock better and are generally more stable.

RAM: Crucial Ballistix DDR2-800 4-4-4 - $140
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146565

This RAM is simply sweet. It is based on D9GMH chips which are awesome for overclocking.

From what I understand that mobo I linked to is a hybrid board, meaning it uses the 650i chipset but runs at full 16x on both slots while in SLI. That way you dont have to deal with the problems with the 680i's.

No problem Dante. My biggest suggestion to you is to sacrifice SLI and go with an Intel chipset. Way better overclocking and much more stable. Intel CPU's + Intel Chipsets = Win. P965 chipset motherboards are cheap and plentiful these days. DFI just came out with their P965 motherboard, which is an awesome overclocker. Heres the linky:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813136034

Its out of stock right now but Im sure u can find it somewhere. People are snapping em up like crazy. Other good P965 motherboards are:

Asus P5B Deluxe or Commando
Abit QuadGT
Gigabyte DS3
