Default Centos 5, 6800 GT black screen (Quadro 4 OK)

Hi,

6800 GT (AGP) card in a P4 based system with clean Centos 5 install followed by appropriate updates (yum update ...).

I have followed advice given in sticky thread about RHEL 5. Looking at both the install log and Xorg.0.log, everything reports OK - the card detects the monitor correctly and chooses the right mode (1600x1200@60Hz). X "starts" with no errors reported, but the screen is completely black - no splash, no cursors, nothing. Monitor still gets signal, and the scan rate is within specs. In the X logs, I can see X is detecting events (eg cursor selects), just nothing is visible. Virtual consoles are fine. I have tried a few driver versions, 9631, 9755, and the beta 100.14. All behave the same.
With my older Quadro 4 card and the legacy driver 9631, the system works as expected.
I have tried every AGP setting, and some options as well. The card works perfectly when booting in XP.

On a different machine running centos 5 (upgrade from 4.4) with a 7950 GT (PCI-E) with 9755 everything appears to work fine (with essentially identical xorg.conf options), so it doesn't appear to be completely a centos problem.

Thanks for the help, Darcy

Have you tried requesting modes other than 1600x1200?
Have you verified that you're using the latest motherboard BIOS?
Does the 'nv' X driver work?

Hello, Thanks for the prompt reply. I do have the newest bios on my MB, and the "nv" driver works with all valid EDID modes (most importantly 1600x1200).

The "nvidia" driver has more trouble [Edit: testing 9755 and the beta driver]. At both 1600x1200 and 1400x1050, the screen is simply a backlit black - no splash, no cursor. Again, X seems to be running, in that mouse events and other things are registered, and the logs give no indication that things are having any trouble. Changes to the AGP mode don't affect the behavior. At 1280x1024 (60 and 75 Hz), I see the splash screen, and I have X, but there are some problems as the screen "bounces" up and down with a few pixel shift, I have flickering stripes across the display, and the edges around any sharp feature (like a window or icon) show significant pixel-flashing activity. 1024x768 with the nvidia driver appears to be stable, but I really need 1600x1200, so this isn't usable for me.

Thanks again, Darcy

If you set NvAGP to 0, does that help?

I'd also like to see a bug report generated while using 1280x1024.

Hello,

Disabling AGP doesn't seem to help. 1920x1200 is still black, 1280x1024 still has the shakes (monitor occasionally flashes as if it loses the signal as well) and 1024x768 are fine. I will attach logs for the different modes. I wouldn't be as perplexed if the card didn't work perfectly in XP @ 1920x1200, and it gives no obvious errors in the log. I can force the same mode, and I get nothing. I was going to force the AGP rate down, or disable AGPgart and force nvagp but since it doesn't work with AGP disabled I don't think that should affect things.

I have to be honest, I don't want to spend too much time screwing around, because I have other things I need to get done. I can throw in my old quadro card, and it works for linux - but then my openGL (and Windows XP) graphics performance really suffers so the situation is far from ideal. My only newer nvidia cards are PCIE (a 7800GTX, a 7950GT and Quadro FX 4500) and in other machines, so I can't test them in this box.

In the past, I have have had similar problems with different cards under linux (the old GeForce2 Ti's for instance), where one works fine, the other nothing, with both working perfectly in 2K/XP - I was just hoping the voodoo was getting a bit less black. In general though, I really appreciate the effort you (nvidia) has put into the linux - thanks - if I could only get 3D modeling/CAD vendors to do the same, Darcy

I'm afraid that I don't have any other suggestions. This problem appears to be specific to your environment.

Ok,
I'll just be on the lookout for new driver releases. In the past, one driver has worked, another hasn't (and it isn't always the newest that works).

cheers, Darcy
