There are a number of things that need to be done before you install the driver. Since you were using the nvidia driver packaged by Ubuntu I assume you are installing the 'linux-restricted-modules-...' package. You will need to edit /etc/default/linux-restricted-modules-common (as root) and assign 'nv' to the DISABLED_MODULES variable. e.g.:

Quote:
DISABLED_MODULES="nv"
Then you will need to uninstall some nvidia related packages (as root):

Quote:
# apt-get remove nvidia-glx nvidia-glx-dev
(you may not have both packages but the command will work regardless).

At this point you should be able to install the package. I usually install like this:

Quote:
# ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.03-pkg1.run -n -s --kernel-source-path=/usr/src/linux-headers-$(uname -r)
You won't have to do the following on subsequent reboots or X restarts, but it's useful for making certain you have done everything correctly:

Quote:
# rmmod nvidia
# modprobe nvidia
# dmesg | tail
When you run that last command check that the correct version of the nvidia driver was installed. You should see something that looks like:

Quote:
...
NVRM: loading NVIDIA UNIX x86 Kernel Module 1.0-9755
...
Now start X and check your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file and make certain that the nvidia version is correct in their also.

If anything goes wrong then document it and post back here. You won't have to re-install ubuntu. If you ever find yourself thinking 'I really need to re-install to fix this problem' then you are going down the wrong path.

Before I go compiling my own driver, I thought I'd at least check Synaptic and I noticed that there is an entry for:

"nvidia-glx-new" Version: 1.0.9755+2.6.20.5-15.20

Any idea if I can just install this using Synaptic package manager? Do I need to uninstall the "nvidia-glx" Version 1.0.9631?

I wasn't aware of this package.

It looks like you can simply install it and it should uninstall the older driver and install this newer one. You should be good to go after that.

You were absolutely right! With the newer driver 1080i works wonderfully.

Those Ubuntu folks need to move that out of the experimental pile and into the released folder.

It actually was released just before Feisty was released. There were so many reported problems they backed off to the current driver they install by default.

Oh, and I'm glad to hear it works for you. :-)

I'm using it w/o issue FWIW. Not everyone is so lucky it would seem. I don't really know any more than that.

Thanks. I'll post if I run into anything weird, but so far so good.
