Default QuadroFX1400 stereo inversion problems with 9755 driver

A Quadro FX1400 card is displaying intermittent stereo inversion with the 9755 driver with kernel 2.6.21.1 (and Xorg 7.1.0-6mdv2007.0 on a Mandriva 2007.1 system) but not on the same machine with a 2.6.17-13mdv kernel.

Here's the story so far:

Started with a Mandriva 2006.0 system, Xorg 6.9.0-5.10.20060mdk,
driver 8756, kernel 2.6.16.3. Stereo worked properly.

Upgraded it to Mandriva 2007.1 (Xorg 7.1.0-6mdv2007.0).
Installed kernel 2.6.21.1 (SMP enabled, in case that matters).
Tested it with:

% pulsar -s

where pulsar is
http://local.wasp.uwa.edu.au/~pbourk...ender/pulsar.c

It looked odd. After a bit I realized that the stereo was inverting roughly every 2 seconds (but that's the average, it seemed to be more or less random.) That is, the left eye view would switch with the right eye. It's
easiest to see this after stopping the rotation of the object displayed and tilting it so that one of the "cones" extends "out" of the screen at an angle. One pretty much needs stereo goggles to see this as without them the effect is pretty subtle - it mostly just looks like a twitch on the screen as the frames swap. With the goggles it's horrible as the depth of the image turns "inside out".

Rebooted to the 2.6.17-13mdv kernel (stock for Mandriva 2007.1). Install the source for that and install the 9755 driver. Test as before, stereo
is now ok - no inversions. That definitively rules out hardware problems. It leaves driver, kernel, and driver+kernel issues.

So something changed between the 2.6.17-13mdv kernel and the 2.6.21.1 kernel. The latter was compiled for SMP and the former was wasn't. (SMP is not needed on this workstation at present, as it's only a single core CPU, but I thought I'd test it since we might upgrade it to a dual core at some point.)

Let's see if I can eliminate this variable by recompiling the kernel without SMP. Recompiled, installed, rebooted, installed 9755 for the 2.6.21.1 kernel, start X, test, and...

It's still inverting. The rate hasn't changed. Apparently it isn't an SMP
issue. I also turned off cpufreq and powernow and unloaded all of the relevant modules, and that didn't cure it either.

Suggestions???

Hardware:

CPU Athlon64 3700+ stepping 02
1 Gb RAM
Asus A8n5X
PNY FX1400 graphics cards

Where did you obtain the 2.6.21.1 kernel?
Does this problem persist with the 100.14.03 beta driver?

Also, please generate and attach an nvidia-bug-report.log

thanks,
Lonni

2.6.21.1 from www.kernel.org, then built it using the .config file
extracted from kernel-linus-source-2.6.21-0.rc3.4mdv-1-1mdv2007.1.i586.rpm
(that's from the Mandriva cooker).

Where would I obtain that beta driver?

The nvidia-bug-report.log is attached, I think, guess we'll both find out after I click on submit reply :-).

The location of the beta driver is in the sticky posts of this forum.

Yes. The pulsar test does exactly the same thing with that beta driver.

I've also discovered another peculiar glitch which seems like it might be related. Unfortunately this one also affects kernel 2.6.17-14mdv as well as 2.6.21.1. When seamonkey 1.1.1 is directed to a page (for instance)

ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/100.14.03/

and I right click on a link (one of the driver files) and then select "save link target as" it pops up two "save as" dialogs which are overlapping and offset about half of the dialog width from each other horizontally. They oscillate back and forth very rapidly, as if it's sort of a right eye, left eye effect. Sort of, because the monitor is running at 85hz so I should not be able to see a true alternating frame image oscillate. The rest of the screen is not affected. Now here's the strange part - the rate of this oscillation is very fast with the 2.6.21.1 kernel using either 9755 or the beta driver, whereas with kernel 2.6.17-13mdv the oscillation occurs, but is much slower. I tried this with both blackbox and fluxbox and the oscillation was the same in both cases.

On another system with identical hardware running Mandriva 2006.0, kernel 2.6.16.16, driver 8756, and also seamonkey 1.1.1 the "save link target as" dialog behaves normally from that same page.

I'd be happy to install 8756 on the newer kernel, but unfortunately it had the "Unable to determine the version of the kernel sources located in /lib/modules/2.6.21.1./source" issue, and I could not work around it.

Also if I keep clicking on the X in upper right corner of either window frame eventually both copies of this dialog will close. I'm guessing that the click event has to hit when the appropriate window is active. However if I click on the "save" button (again in either window) the blinking rate speeds up but nothing else happens.

Some progress. I did a clean install of Mandriva 2007.1 on a second machine, followed by a clean install of the Nvidia version of the nvidia 9755 driver (following removal of the Mandriva supplied nvidia 9755 driver, which wouldn't build on the 2.6.21.1 kernel), and then stereo worked properly for both kernels. Apparently the stereo issue is somehow or other related to some incompatiblity left over from the upgrade of the OS.

The Firefox and Seamonkey "save link as" glitch also happens on an ssh tunnel to a remote X11 server which was not using the 9755 driver. Unfortunately it did use the 8774 driver, so it could still be driver related. Or it could be the fault of some other shared library which changed between 2006.0 and 2007.1.
